Design Strategy - Buttercrumble Meeting

6B2 - Research into exisiting studios and industry professionals and getting their advice and knowledge.
6D2 - How I communicate myself and my work to industry professionals.

After contacting Buttercrumble since October and keeping in touch, I was finally able to meet with Abigail and Chloe for a chat about my future prospects, their work and to show them my current work and projects.

I discussed with them my ambitions of becoming a teacher and how my work mainly revolves around children, as does their own work.

I chatted to them about how they got into having their own studio. They both studied graphic design at University of Leeds, they they both had ongoing intern jobs at companies, doing marketing and digital design, which helped them to learn lots of new skills and learn real world skills as well. They got jobs at these places after they graduated for about 6 months, before they realised they had enough expertise and guidance to create their own business and studio, which was hoe Buttercrumble came about.

They told me about their upcoming project with Chester Zoo and I asked them how they go about getting clients or people reaching out to them. They said a lot of it is word of mouth and once you've done a good job for one client they are likely to recommend you to other people, along with a mixture of reaching out to people.

Abigail and Chloe both thought my aspirations and current studies tied in well together and they told me about GLAM, which stands for galleries, libraries, archives and museums, who they do a lot of work with and helps children get into art and how the two can be tied together.

Above shows my portfolio of work I showed them, they said that my work definitely ties in with theirs and fits their aesthetic and that my personality comes across in my designs, which is rare these days as too many people copy trends etc. They liked my approach to work and how considered the audience and the designs were and the range of work I have.

They offered me work experience on the back of our meeting, however I am unable to attend the dates they set for me and also their new office is out of Leeds and travel would be difficult. However we have both said we will stay in contact and they are always there fore any advice or questions I need.

Design Strategy - Teaching - Ways to Keep your Class Interesting

6A2 6B2 - Research into how to be the best teacher, what I can bring when I begin teaching.
  • Incorporate some mystery into lessons.
  • Do not repeat classroom material.
  • Create classroom games.
  • Give students choices.
  • Utilise technology.
  • Don't take teaching too seriously.
  • Make lessons interactive.
  • Hands on Lessons.
  • Relate material to student's lives.
  • Flip your lessons, flipped classroom.
  • Think outside of the box.

Design Strategy -Teaching - Becoming a Creative Teacher

6A2 6B2 - Research into how to be the best teacher, what I can bring when I begin teaching.
  • Become a Knowledgable Teacher
  •  Creative teachers bring more to class than just a knowledge of teaching. They are educated in other areas, and can draw on their experiences and outside interests.
  • Connect with other teachers.
  • Inspiration rubs off and will create in you the desire to imitate these teachers in your daily teaching practices.
  • Become a collector of teaching ideas.
  • Curation will also help you to be more resourceful, you'll have ideas and activities at your fingertips in case things go wrong.
  • Share your learning.
  • Start a teaching journal or a blog. The act of blogging and describing your teaching ideas generates conversations with other teachers, and those conversations stimulate more ideas; they are a great bridge to creative teaching.
  • Remove the blocks to creative thinking.
  • Practise your creativity.
  • Start experimenting and reflecting on you teaching.
  • Learners respond positively to teachers who don’t follow the same old steps in the same old way day in and day out. As much as learners like teachers who are patient, tolerant and able to explain things well, they appreciate teachers whose lessons have surprises and elements of fun.
  • Make creativity a daily goal.
  • Being creative can help you solve problems. This is useful to teachers because problem-solving is what teachers do every moment of their working day, from deciding on teaching materials, procedures and grades, to adapting an activity that learners are not responding to, and helping individuals who are not progressing as they should.
