Reflecting on Summer
First of all my Summer began with returning to Leeds to carry out Student Ambassador work, firstly actually getting to Leeds on the train and back was a big turning point, as I don't travel on my own very often, especially on trains. Secondly being a student ambassador allows me to practice my communication and speaking skills, especially so with being put on the spot and meeting people from all over the country from all different backgrounds. It also allows me to work alongside people from other courses, which allows for future collaboration and contacts for the future but also constantly making new friends.
Travelling over Summer has allowed me to enjoy and involve myself in different cultures and countries. Visiting Amsterdam firstly allowed me to be independent as it was the first time travelling without parents, which allowed me to realise I can do it and it isn't actually as complicated or scary. I attended the Banksy exhibition which is the one of the only exhibitions I have viewed that I have thoroughly enjoyed and been interested in. Also the Anne Frank museum was very thought provoking and I was interested in ever aspect of the tour. Going on bike tours allowed me to discover the city alongside others from different cultures and countries, learning of other people's life stories is extremley interesting. This visit made me realise I would definitely like to live in Amsterdam at some point in my life, hopefully to teach, or at least I would definitely visit again.
I volunteered in a primary school, painting murals, backgrounds and also being able to experience the teaching and be part of helping classes as I do every year. Every time I volunteer it just justifies and defines my passion of becoming a teacher even more. This time I was able to paint multiple murals and artwork as part of their school displays, which helped me to work to a brief. I have made many contacts and left some very good impressions of myself as they are always happy to have me back and the contacts I have made say they are happy to help with advice or give references in the future. All the staff also have great experience in the process of interviewing and applying for PGCES therefore I can go to them for help when the time comes.
Other bits and bobs that I feel have helped shape me over the Summer consists of voting for the first time in a general election. Which made me think about the government and the future and what kind of future I want to live in and what would be best for the job I want to do and also what would benefit me most now and in the future, I actually paid attention to the parties manifestoes and the news for the first time. Also improving my confidence in driving, doing things that scare you, parking in multi story car parks and overcoming cracked windscreens and popped tyres. I also walked up Snowdon which was very difficult t, but worth it. It helped with my motivation and determination.
When coming back into second year I am trying to have amore positive attitude to let myself enjoy the course more and allow my interests to inform my work. I would like to incorporate my interest in teaching and children into my design work and researching this topic in COP and PPP. Also I am going to involve myself within opportunities to research my career prospects further such as attending teaching talks, career advice workshops. Also the opportunities available with my Student Ambassador work, working with Young Creatives and Summer Schools throughout this year and beyond. Making contacts with universities and grasping a better idea of what I need to do to apply and interviews and so on.
