Design Strategy - Progression Work - Mosaic Workshop

6B2 - Seeing and using opportunities available, working with children in a design and art context.

I helped carried out a workshop with a class of Year 4 Primary School children, which consisted of taking them of a tour of specific parts of the building and workshops and the main task was to create mosaics of roman gods using cut outs of coloured paper.

The tour took them around the gallery space, the cafe/reception, the library and the photography workshop. Whilst they were in each of these areas they had questionnaires to fill out, asking questions such as 'Describe the gallery space', and 'Name three things you can buy or borrow from the library'.

The aim of the main part of the workshop was to create mosaic-like pictures using images of Roman gods, the children could either draw these out themselves or cut and stick directly onto the print outs. Below are some of the work the children did as a result at the end of the workshop.

This activity showed ways of using and integrating art into the curriculum, even within academic subjects such as History and actually creates a fun and memorable experience which may mean they get more from it and learn in a more engaging way.

Their visit to the university also gave the children an insight into what university is and what it's like, showing them what is available to them for their future studies and also what jobs and courses are available in the creative subject industry.

As a part of the workshop; in the afternoon, I showed and shared some of my favourite projects and work from second and third year with the children. This was extremely useful as even though most of my work is directed and made for children, it's hard to get their feedback on the designs I produce. Therefore it was interesting to see them interact with it and ask questions about both my work and the Graphic Design in general.
